A Home Away From Home

Manali, Shimla, Goa are passé… explore new places for your holiday home… explore Incredible India.

By Sunaina Anand

Owning a winter or summer holiday home is a dream for many. But conventional holiday spots have become over commercial, overcrowded and uninteresting. So why not explore new places. We dug out some potential holiday home destinations.

McLeod Gunj - A suburb of Dharamshala, is a little hill station in Himachal Pradesh which is also the home-in-exile of the Dalai Lama. Strewn with Buddhist monasteries and temples, the most important Buddhist site here is the Tsuglagkhang, the Dalai Lama’s temple. Most people flock to this town to learn the tenets of Buddhism from their most revered leader. You can get a glimpse of the Dalai Lama and attend his only public lecture in Dharamshala which happens once every year.

This is an ideal holiday home destination for the sporty type. You could trek up to St. John’s church in the forest or simply hike up to Shiva café for a bite. Dal Lake just a few kilometers off of McLeod Gunj is also good walk and a good picnic spot. An annual fair is held here around August – September.
