Behind The Scenes

We know her as the glamorous face of Newsday, a daily news programme by BBC World News, presented live from Singapore and London. But just who is Babita Sharma?

By Pam Piruzi

With her dazzling smile, charming personality and sparkling wit, the vivacious Babita Sharma quickly endears herself to people. The BBC World News presenter, who was unveiled as the co- host of Newsday early this year, was in Singapore recently to promote the daily news programme, which provides an overview of the day’s big news stories as well as the latest business and sports updates.

Babita, who grew up in Caversham, Berkshire in the UK and now lives in London, said that while she became serious about pursuing a career in journalism only when she decided to study the subject at University, her interest began from a young age – mainly because of her parents: “Meal times in the Sharma household generally coincided with evening news bulletins. Aged six, I vividly remember news coverage of the Falklands War and Michael Foot’s exchanges with Margaret Thatcher in the House of Commons!”

It’s little wonder, then, that Babita has had an impressive journalistic career, covering such major breaking news stories as the assassination of Benazir Bhutto, the Northern Rock banking crisis and the 2010 UK general election. She got her first break in television in the UK, working for Thames Valley Television, before joining BBC Radio Wales as a presenter on A Voice for All.
